"Shortly after President Trump praised the National Guard for their work in Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass reminded residents that the troops had not arrived."

"'Just to be clear, the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles,' she said on social media."

Written in the NYT, 3 hours ago.

More detail, again from the NYT, published 3 hours ago:
National Guard troops will arrive in Los Angeles County within the next 24 hours, the Trump administration’s top law enforcement official in Southern California said, to quell protests over immigration enforcement that are “out of control.”

Bilal A. “Bill” Essayli, the interim U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said in an interview on Saturday night that the 2,000 troops were needed to keep the peace in the sprawling region.... "They threw rocks at the officers,” Mr. Essayli said. “We had Molotov cocktails thrown. We had all kinds of assaults on agents. The state has an obligation to maintain order and maintain public safety, and they’re unable to do that right now in Los Angeles. So the federal government will send in resources to regain order.”...

Gov. Gavin Newsom pushed back against the president’s order, calling it “purposefully inflammatory.” Mr. Trump had federalized the National Guard “not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle,” Mr. Newsom said.

“The governor doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” said Mr. Essayli, a former Republican state legislator who before his federal appointment in April was a frequent critic of Mr. Newsom, a Democrat. “It’s all about a political narrative for him. But we’re not doing politics here, we’re doing public safety. We’re out arresting violent criminals, illegal aliens who are in the country unlawfully, who have criminal records.”...

Mr. Essayli would not say where the National Guard troops would be sent when they arrive on Sunday.... He said much would depend “on where these agitators are congregating” and blamed the state’s “sanctuary” law for the public’s outrage and confusion. California law bars local law enforcement agencies from conducting federal immigration enforcement, but does allow them to detain undocumented criminals for federal deportation if the detainees have been convicted of any one of hundreds of serious offenses....

“The problem is, people have been conditioned to believe that there is an actual sanctuary from immigration laws in California,” Mr. Essayli said. “That is not true. Immigration laws are applicable and will be enforced.”

This might play in the primaries when he runs for President but not with the country overall.

I wonder if Tim Walz and his crazy wife are vacationing there, so they can open up their windows to smell the smoke of the riots, since it is soothing to them??

Flew to California last week to help my wife finish packing then we put her 2 cats in the Hyundai and I brought them to the free and much less lawless state of Florida. Now 2600 miles away we see the sea of Mexican flags waving at the riots, hear the police chief vow not to assist ICE at all and we just thank God we’re not there anymore.

The commies like Bass, the Soros DAs and the Socialist’s signs the rioters hold (which are professionally printed) are happy to circle the drain if they can destroy civilization along with it.

Nebraska has a Jacobin state senator named Megan Hunt. Last week, ICE arrested an illegal alien at a popular restaurant. The ICE agent had on a mask and tackled the guy. Video.

Senator Hunt wrote on FB, “Fuck ICE” and told people to get between ICE if they see this happen again. I told her that she would be arrested for obstruction of justice.

It was really amazing were all the negative comments against ICE and supporting illegal aliens.

It's not even arguable whether "there is a shortage of law enforcement" in California. Or in any other Democrat city or state. That's precisely why the country voted for Trump. And that's precisely why we support such enforcement by ICE and the National Guard.

You must have to use a wheelbarrow to haul your balls around. Seriously, how can you use Jan 6th as an example when Trump gave a blanket pardon (and did he really sign all those pardons himself?) to everyone charged in connection to January 6, even when there was undisputed video evidence of several police being beaten by the protesters?

Obviously, in Trump's world, political violence against the police is a-okay as long as you are supporting the correct cause.

Freder Frederson said...

So, this is a statement from Trump (as reported by Fox News):

"Also, from now on, MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide, and why??? Again, thank you to the National Guard for a job well done!"

Does that also mean that the police will not be allowed to wear masks and that their badge numbers and names will be clearly visible?

Kirk Parker said...

It's not quite that simple; see Printz v. United States.

Though there is certainly no question that actively impeding federal officers, or aiding suspects in evading justice, is it actual crime.

Also copious video evidence of people strolling into the Capitol at the invitation of those presumably guarding it. And many of those people were held incommunicado for months and then given sentences for "parading" and whatnot. We may call the gendarmes in question the Capitol Police, or ICE, but operationally they are all karma police.

Fret not, Freder - I have little doubt President Ocasio-Cortez will issue pardons galore of all the worthies who are currently doing their thang. And then President Rogan will pardon whoever President Ocasio-Cortez puts under her stiletto jackboots. That should get us to about 2040 or so.

john mosby said...

Ref J6 pardons: The system is supposed to err on the side of acquittal/nonprosecution.

Hundreds of people were obviously caught up in the J6 dragnet for just walking between the rope lines, or yelling inflammatory slogans that didn't quite get to incitement.

Lots of people just as obviously fought the police willingly and enthusiastically, causing at least some injuries.

The problem is that for 4 years, the career DOJ, abetted by the Biden appointees, didn't give a monkey's which were which.

The Trump 47 DOJ inheriting this rat's nest could have taken another 4 years to unravel it. They decided doing so would waste resources and prolong the injustice for the rope-line-walkers. So the President just pardoned everybody.

Not perfect, but aligns with the "better 100 guilty men go free than one innocent goes to jail" principle. And the actual ratio was closer to the reverse.

There are no "riots" underway in Los Angeles; I know because I have family who live here. There were a few scattered protests, with the largest numbering in the very low hundreds. Naturally, every publication is now running the one photo of a burning car, making it out to be pandemonium (notice there is no other photo of a burning car—it's just the same car, from every imaginable angle, with the most creative managing to work in the Randy's Donuts sign to boot).

What the news media does not realize is that by, forgive me, 'trumping up' the situation in this way, they are basically doing Trump's bidding, making it look like the US's second-largest city is on fire and providing all the pretext he needs to, for example, nationalize the California National Guard, for which there is no precedent more recent than 1992, when there were actual riots in Los Angeles.

One of the most striking developments in our political culture under Trump’s return to power is the erosion of the foundational norms that underpin a functioning liberal democracy. Increasingly, the political landscape is no longer defined by debate over competing policies or visions for the country’s future. Instead, it has bifurcated into a stark loyalty test: one is either with Trump or against him—and to be against him is to risk being cast as disloyal, unpatriotic, or even criminal.

This is a significant departure from the pluralist tradition that once defined American democracy. Institutions that were once designed to operate independently—judiciary, media, federal agencies—have come under sustained pressure to conform to a personalist agenda. Critics are not merely challenged on the merits of their arguments but are often delegitimized entirely, framed as enemies of the state or part of a “deep state” conspiracy.

What is emerging is a hybrid political model—part populist strongman rule, part personality cult—where power is increasingly centralized and dissent is not just marginalized but criminalized. This is not yet authoritarianism in the strictest sense, but it is undeniably a shift away from democratic pluralism and toward a system where loyalty to the individual supersedes loyalty to the Constitution.

The danger here is not just political polarization. It is the normalization of a system in which law, truth, and citizenship are contingent on allegiance to one man. That is not democracy; it is a warning.

You don't get to import a foreign army into the US and use it to attack US citizens.

This is an 80/20 issue. The only thing we are complaining about is that Trump is too slow and way too nice.

Trump is the best deal you traitors are going to get. Your illegal voters and exploited labor are going to be removed. The crime they brought with them will go.

And the only thing that remains to be determined is how many of the traitorous scum who imported and trained a foreign army on our soil are punished.

If you work with Trump you will only get short jail sentences or maybe none at all.

If Trump fails on this then citizens will turn to whoever is next. We went from Romney to Trump. The next leader will make Trump look like Romney.

X being bought by Elon and becoming the public square has been the most pivotal event in the formation of a social fabric since at least the printing press.

We all see what is going on with our eyes now.

Additionally a critical mass of the citizenry has learned how all of this was funded and organized by government supported NGOs with our own tax money.

The details are yet to be determined. It will take a black swan event more radical than COVID to turn this tide.

And COVID has erased the trust necessary for institutions to be used in that way again.

I will be curious what the globalists come up with this time.

The SCOTUS has already held that enforcing immigration laws is a federal responsibility. However, that doesn't mean that State and local law enforcement can refuse to (1) protect ICE agents from assault (2) inform Federal law officials of illegal aliens when they've been arrested or (3) obstruct ICE from arresting illegal aliens.

Further, if a state or local Government refuses to enforce immigration laws it can penalized by the Federal Government. Of course, this is where the district courts come charging in and simply decide on their politics that witholding funds is too extreme or unwarranted. Assuming thats what the Judges want. If the Judges want the states penalized - they say its OK.
